My name is John Ruiz. I was born in a small town in Southern Texas near the Mexican border. During the early years of my childhood, I lived both in Texas and Mexico. I am the fifth of eleven children and both of my parents were born in Mexico. Our family eventually permanently moved to Texas in the early 1940s to work as migrant farm workers and traveled and worked throughout the Southwest.
The first five years of my life were very challenging due to the extreme poverty and transient lifestyle we all lived. This suffering and hardship brought our family closer together and gave us the strength to persevere. Now that I am older, I more fully understand and value the importance of those early lessons. I do not view them as unfortunate experiences, but rather as gifts of Spiritual Empowerment that I share with my clients in my teachings and practice.
Over time, my life experiences that include a college education, military service, and more than 30 years of working with persons with disabilities in Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling programs have combined to make me the person I am today. I have practiced and taught Reiki for eight years and have studied Shamanism and the Martial Arts. My interest in energy and spiritually based healing began when I was a child under the mentoring of my father, a “Curandero” (a healer or medicine person in Mexico). His teachings, love, wisdom, and the Universal Principles of our ancestors from Mexico and our Native American brothers and sisters are the core of my belief system. This knowledge embodies the life path that I follow today and that I apply to my counseling, teaching, and spiritual practice.
